IT WAS a day to remember for pupils at a primary school outside of Oswestry after the opening of new facilities funded in part by Shropshire Council.

The new suite at West Felton CoE Primary School, in Grimpo Road, was officially opened by mayor of Shrewsbury Councillor Becky Wall on Tuesday, March 12.

The project was jointly-funded by Shropshire Council and West Felton Parish Council and according to headteacher Helen Hughes, the suite of new facilities will have a ‘great’ impact on its pupils.

She said: “A large multi-purpose hall has been built at the rear of the site and the entire school can now join together for lunch, worship, celebration assemblies and Christmas performances.

“It is perfect for physical education – no longer are we forced to split classes or brave the elements – every class can enjoy the spacious facilities.

“The number of children on roll at West Felton CofE Primary School has doubled in the last 20 years, from 80 in 2003 to just under 160 today.

“Prior to the new build, children were collecting their lunch from a small demountable, carrying it across the playground and eating in their classrooms.

“Not only have we had the new hall – known as The Glade – but also a whole new suite at the front of the building.

The entrance is brighter, safer and more accessible to all, welcoming the children, their families and the community.

“We now have a nurture nook where 1-2-1 support can take place in a private, quiet space.

“Our emotional literacy support sssistant can work with individuals, groups and parents.

“The nurture nook is furnished with a superb new collection of books which help children manage feelings and emotions, explore issues they may be facing and equip them for life in all its fullness.”

Cllr Wall was joined by representatives from Shropshire Council and West Felton Parish Council plus other supporters such as Aico, West Felton WI, West Felton Stores and St Michael’s Church.
