The headteacher at Ysgol Llanfyllin has hailed his students after an “absolutely fantastic” set of exam results.

The school followed up it’s good A-level results day last week with an equally impressive performance from the latest GCSE cohort on Thursday (August 25). There were a number outstanding individual performances including 29 students – 30 per cent of the year group – who achieved five or more A* and A grades or equivalent.

Headteacher Dewi Owen said: “I am, as they say in Welshpool, hellish chuffed. The results have been absolutely fantastic and this group of students again had to go through lockdown, online learning, school closures – they’ve done brilliantly.

“We’ve had over 30 per cent of our year 11s have been able to get 5 A*s or As overall, that’s wonderful, absolutely wonderful and they’ve all done brilliantly so were absolutely proud of them and the staff and the parents – it’s a huge thank you.”

One Pupil who did exceptionally well, was Cadi Davies who said it had gone “shockingly well”.

“I’ve got 10 A*, one A, and one distinction star. I don’t know what I was expecting really because it feels so long since I actually did the exam,” said Cadi.

“Then it’s just the waiting, I had so I tried to forget about them a bit. Yeah, I’m just super relieved really.

“Especially after lockdown and everything, it was just hard getting motivated to do work so I was quite worried after doing quite well in my mocks I was going to get lazy, so I was like nah I can’t do that.”

In a statement the school said they were “proud” of their students and that: “our wonderful students have once again achieved amazing GCSE and BTEC results that give a great foundation to move onto further education or the world of work.

“After two years of disruption for learners, this year has been the first time since 2019 that externally assessed exams have been held in schools and colleges and the first to be published since the opening of the new all age Ysgol Llanfyllin.
