I have lived in Pant for 22 years and can testify that the Llynclys Crossroads is quite simply dangerous, yet no one does anything about it.

I am sure there are hundreds who have experienced a near miss at this junction.

My most recent near miss was during the summer holidays when travelling towards Oswestry.

A car from the Knockin direction decided to “gun it” thru a gap in the traffic.

Decided half way across that he was not going to make it and screeched to a stop in the middle of the road in front of me. I too screeched to a stop, and then had to let him continue as he effectively was blocking both carriageways. Not sure who was in more shock. Myself, the driver or the passengers in the car.

OTHER NEWS:

People forget the A483 is the Manchester / Swansea trunk road and the main road down the back bone of Wales.

Motorists often take theirs (and others) lives in their hands crossing over at Llynclys Crossroads. This if often down to frustration waiting in the queue and then waiting for a break in the traffic. The current dangerous practice is just to pull out half way across the road, effectively blocking the traffic, and waiting for someone to let you across.

In my view the problem is that’s its not a true crossroads. Its staggered. With no proper road markings for this type of junction it makes it very difficult turning right off the main road.

Its not helped that drivers don’t leave a space behind the car turning right and so block the road, plus vehicles undertake the vehicle turning right. Its also not helped when a “helpful” drivers decides to flash his lights ( see DVLA Highway code section 110) and its pot luck which of the three cars waiting blinks first.

The hope has always been that it would become a roundabout when the Pant/ Llanymynech bypass was constructed. It must be about 30 years since the by pass was proposed.

That furthest back I got was a Government paper entitled “A new deal for Trunk roads in England” published on 31/07/1998. Over the years all the local MPs have had their picture taken at the crossroads. It’s only got worse.

While not holding my breath for the bypass, the solution would seem to be traffic lights with filters. Possible at peak times.
