The Cambrian Railway building received the 2025 National Railway Heritage Award following a conservation project led by Shropshire Council and funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Shropshire Council.
Restoration work took place between July 2024 and May 2025 and was carried out by building specialists Phillips and Curry Ltd.
Councillor Roger Evans, cabinet member for finance at Shropshire Council, said: "This is brilliant news for the council, for Oswestry and for Shropshire, and is a real credit to the council’s Property Services Group (PSG) who managed this project, and to the conservation experts from Phillips and Curry.
"My thanks and congratulations go to all involved.
"This building holds significant cultural value for our community, and these essential repairs will ensure it remains safe and usable for future generations."
The restoration included exterior repairs, asbestos removal, the installation of Welsh slate tiles, and repainting in Cambrian Railway colours.
Wildlife-friendly features such as swift nesting boxes and bat roosting tiles were also added.
Councillor Duncan Kerr, who represents Oswestry South, added: "This is an iconic and symbolic building for Oswestry and the standard of the external renovation is remarkable, but it is still a long journey back to finding a sustainable and vibrant use for this building.
"It wasn’t that long ago that it housed several start-up businesses and a great cafe, along with a ticket hall for the Cambrian railway.

"Let’s hope we can use the success and publicity generated by the works to date to complete the course so this heritage asset can inspire and serve residents and visitors alike for the next century."
The Grade II-listed building originally opened in 1866 and served as a railway station and administrative headquarters for the Cambrian Railway.

It closed in 1966 and has since seen various uses over the decades.
The award was presented in London on Wednesday, December 3, 2025.

Shropshire Council took ownership of the building in early 2023 to secure its long-term future after years of neglect and storm damage.
The council’s Property Services Group secured £765,250 in funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the Rural England Prosperity Fund to support the project.
A judge from the awards said: "The restoration of the Cambrian Station Oswestry is easily the best scheme that I have been privileged to assess during my four-year judging career."
