COUNCILLORS in Oswestry can formally start to make plans to improve a bus shelter outside Sainsbury’s supermarket, a meeting will be told.

Town councillors recently requested that Shropshire Council allows them to adopt the shelter in Black Gate Street in order to make necessary improvements.

A report from Corrie Davies, project development manager at Oswestry Town Council, prepared for the full meeting on Wednesday (7pm), confirmed Shropshire Council has agreed to the request.

And she has also set out options based on a current Oswestry Town Council-owned ‘green roof’ shelter in Church Street – funded through the High Streets Heritage Action Zone – and recommended following a similar design at a cost of around £25,000.

She said: “Green roofed bus shelters are proving popular across the country with many councils replacing (theirs) with green roofs for carbon capture and to encourage biodiversity and nature into town locations.

“There are a number of options for bus shelters; however, it is recommended that an Oswestry standard is developed.

“Options include living walls, solar panels, safe display of information etc.

“On utilising existing bus shelters for display of information it has become clear to officers that closed display sections would be better placed for keeping information tidy, clean and reducing the chance of information being ripped off.

“Feedback from members will allow officers to obtain quotations, but the Church Street shelter illustrates the cost.”

Ms Davies also recommends members begin to consider how the council’s other six shelters – in Willow Street, Oswald Road, College Road, Shrewsbury Road, Cabin Lane and Old Fort Road – can also be upgraded.

She added: “The bus shelters form part of wider discussions on improving the use of public transport in the town.

“Ensuring that bus shelters are in relevant and in correct locations is also essential.”

Included in her recommendations is asking the council to consider an estimated expenditure of £50,000 which she says would be funded from the Smithfield Capital Receipt money.

Councillors will also be asked to consider whether ‘optional extras’, such as Wi-Fi and living walls, would be considered.

Three quotations will be secured, as per council regulations.

The meeting will be held at the Guildhall on the Bailey Head and will start at 7pm.
