A YOUNG groundskeeper at a north Shropshire college has secured a full-time job following his apprenticeship.

Tommy Williams embarked on his apprenticeship journey at Ellesmere College in September 2021.

Over the course of two productive years, the 20-year-old diligently combined practical experience with online studies through Preston-based Myerscough College.

A tutor also made regular visits every six weeks to provide guidance and assess his progress.

Ian Morris, the head groundsman at Ellesmere College, expressed his admiration for Tommy's contribution.

He said “Tommy has been a fantastic addition to the team here at Ellesmere.

“He has thrown himself into every task across our extensive site and you can see the way he developed throughout his two years.

“We are incredibly proud of Tommy, who has covered all aspects of golf course maintenance.

“We wish him every success in his new job.”

Tommy's hard work and dedication has paid off, as he has been offered a position in the gardens department at Shrewsbury School.

During his greenskeeping apprenticeship, Tommy completed practical assignments at Ellesmere College, meticulously set by his tutor.

His training was conducted in-house under the guidance of the college's ground staff.

The tutor, during their regular visits, assessed the tasks assigned to Tommy.

Subsequently, Tommy passed a rigorous practical examination, evaluated by an external expert, in addition to an online written examination.

Reflecting on his journey, Tommy said: “My time at Ellesmere College has been an exciting experience from start to finish.

“I have truly developed skills not only within the trade, but also my personal skills such as communication.

“I enjoyed many different experiences during my apprenticeship such as the chance to operate machinery for processes like aeration, scarification, mowing with cylinder and rotary mowers both ride-on and pedestrian, and even the opportunity to update the grounds files.

“I can say for certain that I gained not only lots of useful experience moving forward, but confidence for future steps in life.”
