A GREEN-FINGERED fundraiser has raised more than £900 for Macmillan Cancer Support through the public unveiling of his picturesque garden.

Tom Pountney decided to open the doors to his stunning Offcot garden, nestled in the idyllic village of Kynaston, near Kinnerley.

And it proved to be a resounding success, attracting around 70 enthusiastic visitors.

The garden, featured a meticulously curated selection of beautiful trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants, each chosen for their vivid colors, captivating forms, and exquisite blooms.

Gill Eleftheriou, a member of Macmillan Cancer Support’s Shrewsbury fundraising group, expressed her admiration for Tom's garden and hospitality.

She said: “Tom's garden really is amazing and he's a wonderful host and plantsman.

“People came from across Shropshire to support us and thoroughly enjoyed the day.

“Tom has generously offered to open the garden again for us next year, probably in early July to avoid a clash with holidays and other events.”

Visitors had the chance to wander along meandering paths, pause beside a tranquil fish pool, and marvel at dedicated areas teeming with thriving vegetables and local wildlife.

This wasn't Tom's first venture into charitable endeavors.

In the past, he generously opened his garden to support the National Garden Scheme, showcasing his commitment to both gardening and charity causes.

Encouraged by this success, Tom graciously pledged to open his garden again next year, likely in early July, to ensure that it doesn't clash with other events or holidays.

He said: “I held an open garden for the first time three years ago and it’s nice to be able to share it with visitors and raise money for charity at the same time.”

In addition to scenic wonders, visitors were treated to delectable refreshments, homemade cakes, and the opportunity to purchase plants from Tom's garden.

Tom himself led tours, sharing his gardening journey, which had been a labor of love for the past eight years since he moved to Offcot.

Tom's green thumb recently found further recognition when, in collaboration with Love Plants and Salop Leisure, he designed a captivating cottage garden, featuring a Salop Innovations shepherd's hut at its heart.

This exquisite creation secured a gold medal in the horticultural section at this year's Shrewsbury Flower Show.
