A GERMAN language group nestled in Oswestry is commemorating its remarkable 10-year journey, extending a warm invitation to local speakers to join their engaging community.

This unique social group, composed of locals who share a love for the German language, has been a hub of cultural exchange over the past decade.

Their activities span a wide spectrum, encompassing visits to local cafés, film screenings, dining adventures at restaurants, and jovial gatherings at pubs.

Presently, they convene approximately every other week at the Willow Gallery café, striving to create a welcoming environment where German speakers can reconnect with friends and stay abreast of the latest in literature, culture, and politics.

Christa Griffiths, a devoted member of the Oswestry Stammtisch, emphasized their social essence: "We are primarily a social group who just happen to share in common that we speak German.

“We have a wide mix of ages and backgrounds and would love more people to join us."

In addition to their cherished rendezvous over coffee and cake, group members enthusiastically participate in outings to film showings, lectures, and exhibitions, fostering a diverse and engaging community.

“Our meetings have no set agenda, we just chat about whatever is of interest, from gardening tips to current affairs, and we share books and German language films," Christa added.

To celebrate their illustrious ten-year milestone, the group received a message from the German Embassy.

Julia Harrer, the German Embassy's Regional Coordinator for the West Midlands, expressed her delight: “Congratulations to the German Stammtisch in Oswestry on its 10th anniversary.

"We at the German Embassy are delighted to hear that a love of the German language has brought people together in Oswestry and the region for a decade now.

“The civic ties between the UK and Germany really are a cornerstone of the friendship between our countries.”

While the group primarily draws attendees from Oswestry and its surroundings, some members hail from other parts of Shropshire and Wales, underscoring the group's widespread appeal.

Christa highlighted their desire to expand ties with local businesses linked to German-speaking countries.

She added: "We know that there are a number of local businesses that have links to German speaking countries, and we’d love to develop links with them, especially if they have German speaking employees who would like to keep their language skills alive."

The group humbly acknowledges that they do not offer formal German language instruction during their meetings.

However, they are eager to connect individuals with resources for learning the language.
