AN URGENT call for new tenants for a village pub outside Oswestry has been made by its owner.

Derek Jones owns the Barley Mow Inn pub and its sister business Offa’s Dyke Brewery off Oswestry Road in Trefonen.

He has made the urgent plea to find new tenants after the sudden departure of the previous incumbent left him with no other choice than to close the pub, which left residents without a place to gather and drink.

He said: “Trefonen is a friendly village.

“It’s a classic little country pub, and it has its own on-site brewery adjoining the building and we’ve just extended it quite recently with a new dining room.

“It’s ready to go – tenants can walk in straight away.

“Ideally, we want someone with experience but you often get newcomers who are pretty good.

“It’s important for the village to have its pub open – it’s well-supported and the issue has been that we’ve had too much trade and we couldn’t get enough staff.

“Ideally, we would let it to a couple and it would suit someone who make it their career.”

The pub is blessed with a car park and plenty of space, with a position right at the heart of the village.

Derek said his preference was to find tenants to run the pub that means so much to him, but added that there could be a ‘reluctant’ sale if it helps keep the pub open.

But he added until new people can be installed at the Barley Mow Inn, it will have to remain closed as there is no-one to run it.

“I’ve got no plans to sell it because ideally, I’d get a good tenant who’d be there forever but having said that, if no tenants come forward and I get an offer for the pub, I’d have to consider it if it was the only way to keep the pub open.”

“I’ve had it 20 years and I am very fond of it – there’s a lot of pressure to choose the next tenant.

“It’s been shut since the tenant left – we want anyone who thinks they can take this on to get in touch.”
