IF YOU'RE looking for a different way to mark the coronation of King Charles III next month, those working on bringing the Montgomery Canal back to life have something for you.

The Shropshire Union Canal Society has teamed up with Oswestry Rural Parish Council to encourage people to donate a day volunteering on the restoration project over the bank holiday weekend in May.

Full details are due to be revealed tomorrow (Thursday, April 13) at the annual parish meeting in Trefonen Village Hall from 7pm.

A spokesperson from the Oswestry Rural Parish Council said: “For more than 30 years the then Prince Charles has been actively involved in the restoration of the Montgomery Canal and has visited a number of times, and in line with the King’s hope that people will volunteer a day’s work in celebration.

OTHER NEWS:

“The council and canal society are joining together to provide an opportunity for local people to do just that over the coronation weekend, to create a good quality all-weather footpath alongside the canal in Crickheath, replacing the present muddy path.”

They continued: “Oswestry Rural Parish Council is providing the materials and Shropshire Union Canal Society will provide the facilities, equipment, coordination, and expertise.

“Both council and canal society hope that the community will come together over the weekend to mark the coronation in a very special way, which will result in a lasting improvement to this historic canal.”

Adults can volunteer any day from Friday,  May 5 through to Monday, May 8.

Council chairman Martin Jones will be on site to cut a ceremonial ribbon to open the new path to the public on the Monday afternoon.

As this will be a construction site those aged 16 or 17 will need to be accompanied by a guardian, but children will not be allowed.

To volunteer or find out more about this, you can contact Chris Hesketh on 07703 438262.

Each child will be presented with a specially struck medal to mark the special event.
