OSWESTRY residents have played their part in helping to raise £15,000 for a end-of-life care hospice in Wrexham which supports people in the area.

More than 14,000 Christmas trees were collected for recycling after the festive period, raising the remarkable amount for patient care at the Nightingale House Hospice in Wrexham.

Working in partnership with local firms and volunteers, it is the fourth year the hospice has offered the service when, for a small donation, people can have their trees collected once Christmas festivities are over.

Sam Amis, hospice events fundraiser, said: “On behalf of the hospice, I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone involved in making the Christmas Tree Collection a success.

"From those who volunteered to deliver leaflets, taking bookings over the phone and helping us spread the word about the event, to those who have helped us on the day collecting and recycling all the trees.

"I would also like to thank everyone who registered their Christmas Tree to be collected.

"It is so wonderful to see the community come together for such a brilliant cause and every penny raised will have a huge impact here at Nightingale House.”

OTHER NEWS:

Volunteers from local business donate their time and vehicles to brave the cold and wet January weather to help collect and recycle the trees.

Some are turned into garden mulch, some are chipped and used for animal bedding or garden supplies and others will be donated to local animal farms who look after alpacas and goats.

Volunteers from companies across Wrexham, Flintshire, Llangollen, and Oswestry took part and the hospice also thanked sponsors Thorncliffe Building Supplies, TG Group Skip Hire, ASH Waste and P&A Group.

Charity partner Just Helping has also been thanked for helping organise the event as well as Wrexham Army Cadets who have supported the hospice with various fundraising events and will also benefit from some of the profits from this year’s collection.
