Oswestry Firsts 7, Ormskirk 18
THIS week the Eagles welcomed promotion-chasing Ormskirk to Granville Park for yet another tough game.
Oswestry were on the back foot immediately as Ormskirk muscled their way into the home half but superb defence and big scrums kept the visitors at bay.
Finally the Eagles gained possession, aided by some superb steals by Tom Thorpe and Dan Samuels and good phases by the forwards then drew in several defenders, giving Kev Evans the opportunity to put a kick in behind the defence. Nick Howland showed his pace, outrunning his opposite number and the fullback, showing his football skills to kick on and score a try, converted by Evans.
Ormskirk continued to pressure Oswestry for the rest of the half but the home defence held firm
.
The second half started badly as Ormskirk showed their power with a rolling maul and scored early, unconverted. They almost scored again but a tackle by Luca Owen-Youens prevented a try.
But the visitors were not to be denied and poor discipline by Oswestry saw them gain a lineout deep in the Eagles’ half and another rolling maul resulted in another try, unconverted.
The hosts did not learn from their mistakes, and more indiscipline in the ruck gave the visitors the opportunity to extend their lead with a penalty kick, to put them two scores ahead. Oswestry finally woke up and strung some phases together but a good steal, kick and chase saw Ormskirk score again.
l This week, Oswestry travel to Orrell, kick-off 2.30pm.
