WELSH football will feature a new name next season.

Llanfarthin Football Club will line up in the new North East Wales Championship, the fifth tier of a new look Welsh football pyramid which is due to kick off next season.

The club is descended from St Martins Village Football Club which formerly competed in the Shropshire League.

The new fourth and fifth tiers of the Welsh football pyramid are to be run by area associations and as such the club is eligible to compete in cross border competition.

A club spokesman said: “We can now announce that for the new season we will be playing at tier five in the North East Wales Football League Championship.

“We would like to wish everyone the very best in the new season ahead after all these trying times we all have experienced and keep safe and abide by the Football Association of Wales (FAW) guidelines.”

The club is joined by AFC Bagillt, CPD Bellevue, Borras Park Albion, CPD Caerwys, Connah’s Quay Town, Deeside FC, Mold Town United, Penyffordd Lions, Railway Rovers, Ruabon Rovers and CPD Sychdyn in the new league which will form the bottom rung of the new Welsh pyramid.

Meanwhile the club has wasted little time preparing for the new league with the appointment of a new manager.

Jamie Turnbull has taken over the reins with the club now pressing ahead with its pre-season plans.

A club spokesman said: “Jamie is already putting things into place for the season ahead and expressed how keen he is to get pre-season started welcoming new and old faces to the club.

“We are a local team based in the village of St Martins and are now in the process of trying to get young local adults back into playing football after these unprecedented times we are experiencing at this moment.

If you are a young local adult looking to get back into grassroots football please contact our new manager on 07443625198 or keep your eyes peeled on our Facebook page as we are waiting for the green light from the League to when we can start our pre-season training.”

The club will train behind Stan’s Superstore and offers an invitation to all aspiring new players to get in contact ahead of an exciting new era for the border club in the Welsh pyramid.
