Oswestry Team Tennis held its very first Volleywood event at Oswestry Cricket Club on Saturday night.

More than 100 people of all ages attended the event and enjoyed a night of Oscars, Hall of Fame, red carpet, glitz, annual awards and fun.

Clare Parsons-Hann was the inspiration behind creating the new format for the evening, with the club’s junior members very much involved in running the evening’s activities including interviewing, presentations, quiz, speed serve competition, and recognition of junior achievements not only in tennis but also beyond.

Matei Balasa interviewed Garmon Evans and Millie Parsons-Hann on their Wimbledon trip to represent North Wales and Shropshire respectively in August in the Road to Wimbledon under-14s championships and on their further aspirations.

Andrew Hollywell with Maisie Anderson and Lewis Anderson with George Grindley interviewed Tennis2You coaches Ben Syrett-Judd and Blake Strefford about their work and diverse experiences.

The mini table tennis challenge between the coaches resulted in Blake just about claiming bragging rights over Ben with a very close 10-9 victory.

Alan Lewis – organiser of Oswestry 10k, was the guest of honour at the event, and spoke about his background in local and international sport and offered sound advice to the youngsters.

Carlton Leonard took on the role of MC for the evening.

A total of 14 annual awards were presented to juniors by Tennis2You coaches Ben Syrett-Judd and Blake Strefford, with last year’s winners on hand to congratulate their successors.

Joe Shiel completed the evening by thanking Clare Parsons-Hann for her creativity and passion to make Volleywood happen, not forgetting her significant support team.

Joe also thanked Carlton, Alan, Urban Grillhouse for their catering, Oswestry Cricket club for its hospitality and everyone else for their involvement.
