The New Saints 5

Newtown 0

The New Saints kept the pressure on leaders Connah’s Quay Nomads with a thumping home win over Newtown on Friday night.

Saints dominated their near neighbours with goals from Ryan Brobbel, Jack Bodenham, Jamie Mullan and sub Greg Draper.

TNS were given a scare inside the first minute when a poor back pass from Simon Spender was picked up by Nick Rushton but his touch was too heavy.

Saints took the lead on 15 minutes and it was entirely of Brobbel’s making as he dispossessed Kieran Mills-Evans and slotted past stand-in keeper Jack Perry.

Just after the half-hour mark, Tom Holland stung Perry’s palms from 25 yards out after he picked up a loose ball as TNS dominated.

Saints doubled their lead in first-half stoppage time when home debutant Bodenham slid home at the back post from Brobbel’s free kick.

It was three straight after the break when Mullan smashed home from 12 yards out, with Brobbel providing the assist once more.

It could have been four on 55 minutes when Kurtis Byrne’s goal-bound effort was brilliantly blocked on the line by Craig Williams.

Deadline-day signing Billy Whitehouse made his Saints’ bow and he was joined by veteran Draper five minutes later.

The Kiwi international grabbed his customary goal on 75 minutes when one-on-one with Perry, he slotted home with ease to make it four.

Draper added his second and Saints' fifth bang on minutes when he tapped home into an empty goal to give Brobbel a hat-trick of assists.
