St MARTINS were without a game on the weekend, however they received some good news as ever-present goalkeeper George Austin picked up the North West Counties Football League Division One South goalkeeper of the month award.

Austin has been the man between the sticks for every Saints fixture since April 2017 and has been rewarded for his heroics after a busy month for his side.

Austin managed to keep three clean sheets in seven games last month, as well as picking up the man of the match award on two occasions.

His form has contributed to another successful month for Dan Stevens’ men that has seen his side continue to progress in the league and reach the next round of the Shropshire Cup.

Stevens has praised his in-form shot-stopper, saying the award is down to his effort and dedication.

He said: “I’m delighted for George to win this award.

“It’s testament to the hard work he has put in on the training ground – he has not missed a training session all season.

“Credit in large part should also go to Dan Edwards, our goalkeeper coach, who has done a brilliant job since he joined the club.

“There were some really important saves that gained us some points especially at Cheadle Town as our form hasn’t quite been up there recently.”

Stevens also gave a mention to those in front of the keeper higher up the pitch who have been playing their part to ensure they can pick up good results in some of the tight, hard-fought fixtures.

His side boasts one of the best defensive records in the league, having conceded 28 goals in their 21 games so far.

He added: “We have had to grind out results at times. I know George would also pay tribute to the work that all the lads in front of him are doing too.

“If you take out the five goals conceded at Sandbach, which was heavily influenced by the poorest officiating I have seen, we would be right up there with one of the best defensive records in the league.

“It’s really nice for George to have won our first accolade since we stepped up to this level, we’re all really pleased for him.”

St Martins are preparing for their next fixture which will take place on Saturday when they host Stone Old Alleynians at Park Hall Stadium (kick-off 3pm).

The Saints are now just three points behind their target of 40 points set by their boss at the start of the season.

They will be hoping that they can keep their visitors at bay in the hope of securing another three points.

Alleynians have proved to be a tough nut to crack themselves so far this season, with the third best defensive record in the league this season, having let in just 23 goals in 19 games.
