Oswestry Tennis Club’s second mixed team narrowly avoided relegation for next season.

The team's penultimate fixture saw them hosting a strong second team from Boughey Gardens who were currently sitting at the top of the table.

A victory for the mixed team would avoid relegation and put the them in the top spot in the league, and prime position to achieve promotion with one match left to play.

However the result of the match did not go in Oswestry's favour.

In the first round rubbers the first pair of Gary Edwards and partner Speth Cumpston were no match for the opposing first pair going down in straight sets 4-6, 0-6.

The second pair of Brett Hollywell and Clare Parsons-Hann got a superb win after coming back strong after dropping the first set 2-6, 6-4, 1-0.

In the reverse rubbers both pairs lost in straight sets 3-6, 4-6, and 5-7, 3-6 respectively.

So with just one point from the four on offer, Oswestry now go into their final fixture needing at least a draw to secure third place in their group and avoid one of the four relegation places.

This fixture, also at home, saw them play a re-arranged fixture again Team Mosaic 4.

A four point victory would keep them in contention to finish in one of the top two places and promotion, a draw would see them as the one team that would retain their place in Group 3 but anything less would see them relegated.

In the first round rubbers Edwards and Cumpston successfully defeated the opposing first pair in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 but Hollywell and Parsons-Hann went down 3-6, 2-6.

In the reverse rubbers Edwards and Cumpston found themselves outplayed by the Mosaic second pairing losing 2-6, 2-6 leaving the fourth rubber between Hollywell and Parsons-Hann crucial to Oswestry’s fate, but they held their nerve to win in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

So the Oswestry team eventually completed their season in third place therefore retaining their position in Group 3 next season.
