THREE of the region’s clubs have been selected to take part in the Football Association of Wales Trust (FAWT) ‘More than a club’ programme.

MMP-NL Mid Wales League One side Llandrindod Wells along with MMP-NL Mid Wales League Two side Newbridge and Watson Financial Mid Wales League South leaders Talgarth Town have been selected as part of 42 clubs across Wales.

The clubs will benefit from a bespoke enterprise, mentoring and coaching programme aimed at generating ideas on how to attract more players and volunteers, increasing income and becoming a bigger part of their community.

Llandrindod Wells Football Club committee member Nigel Thomas was delighted the club had been selected and looked forward to launching the scheme.

Thomas said: “We have an opportunity to develop our club over the next 12 months.

“As a club we are at a crossroads and unless we press forward with our plans and goals then we risk stagnating.

“We want to go out into the community and get as many people as possible involved with their club, whether that is playing, coaching, volunteering, sponsoring or supporting.”

The club currently runs two senior sides as well as a thriving junior set-up and well established girls section.

However Thomas insisted the club still had areas to improve.

“We are well known in Central Wales but we want to take the club forward,” said Thomas.

The town’s drastic shortage of football facilities is also a long running problem which Thomas hopes the club can finally address as members of the programme.

“It is well known the town does not have sufficient facilities to meet demand but we hope we can finally overcome this and have been encouraged by talks with the FAW Trust.”

Meanwhile work has already begun at Talgarth Town with club officials meeting with Football Association of Wales (FAW) officials this week to outlay their plans.

Meanwhile Newtown have also been included among the 42 clubs across Wales to take part in the 12 month community engagement scheme.

The Robins have already been out into the community with a weekend coaching session delivered by first ream star Neil Mitchell at Maesyrhandir Primary School while also taking part in an anti-racism workshop at Hafren Primary School in the town.
