An Oswestry golfer is feeling proud after representing her county recently.

Julia Line of Llanymynech Golf Club rounded off a successful year of golf when she was selected as part of the Shropshire Senior county team to play in the Midlands Vets County Team Championship.

A team of four players was selected to represent Shropshire to play two days of stroke play competition against 18 top county teams from across the country.

The competition was played at Luffenham Heath Golf Club – a course regarded as one of the best in Leicestershire.

Shropshire struggled to keep up with the quality of some of the country’s leading county sides, managing to finish one spot above bottom place.

Julia said that it was a great experience to represent her county and spoke of how tough the course was to play on.

She said: “I was thrilled in 2017 to get my Shropshire senior county colours (playing six times), but 2018 was even better when I was selected to play for the Shropshire second team and received my second team county colours (playing 10 times).

“I was on a roll and when players were invited to be considered to play in the Midlands Vets County Team Championship and I was asked to go in. I was thrilled but a little nervous as to what to expect. The warm-up greensomes match was tricky, having to play alternate shots made it hard to get to grips with the challenging course. The weather was great, but that wasn’t to last long over the days the event took place.”

The event was played on the weekend that Hurricane Florence brought high winds towards the UK, making an already difficult course even harder.

She added: “It was a tough day for us on the opening day – we were 24 points behind the winning team.

“With the bad weather affecting the play, the organisers took the decision to reduce the competition to nine holes on the second day, and we put in a great effort, finishing 32 net points behind the winners.

“It was a baptism of fire and an eye-opening experience.

“I had no idea that so many over 50s ladies could play so well in such difficult conditions.”

After a successful year which saw Julia travel to Scotland with fellow Llanymynech member Norma Hughes to compete in the Coronation Foursomes at St Andrews, Julia is looking forward to emulating her success next season.

She said: “What this year has taught me is that if you expand your horizons you can achieve things that you could have only dreamt about.

“Who would have thought that Norma and I would be playing at the home of golf representing Llanymynech and Shropshire?

“It’s been great and I can’t wait for next season.”
