Oswestry Tennis Club’s men’s first team had their second fixture of the season and their first at home against a team from Ludlow Castle tennis club.

In the first round rubbers, the first pairing of Captain Martin Shorrt and Oliver Tombs took the first set 6-2 but then dropped the second by the same score line 2-6 taking it to a deciding third set tie break which they won 1-0. The second pair of Gary Edwards and Matt Grice easily beat the opposing second pair for the loss of only one game 6-1, 6-0.

In the reverse rubbers Shorrt and Tombs were triumphant in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 and Edwards and Grice upped their game against the opposing first pair when they took the first set on a tie break 7-6 before their opposition capitulated in the second set 6-0. So the home team took all of the four points on offer.

The men’s second team had their first fixture at home when they entertained a team from High Ercall tennis club.

In the first round rubbers the first pair of Captain David Clough partnering Brett Hollywell got off to a nervous start before taking the first set 6-4 and then the second 7-5.

The second pair of Saffron Rainey and David Bass overcame the opposing second pair in a first set tie break 7-6 before racing through the second set 6-1.

In the reverse rubbers Clough and Hollywell maintained their form to beat the second pair in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Rainey and Bass took the first set against the opposing first pair 7-5 but then dropped the second set 4-6 to take it to a deciding third set tie break where they just lost out 0-1. So the home team took a three points to one victory
