Malpas & Oswestry 1 went down 3-2 to Chester C on Tuesday April 24 in Division 1 of the Wirral Chess League.
For Malpas & Oswestry Dave Bennion won with white on board 4, Richard Bryant drew with white on 2 and Peter Fisher drew with black on 5. Brian Whyte lost on 1 and Charles Lowick Higgie lost on 3, both with black.
It was the last home game of the 2017-8 season and was played at The Old School Tea Rooms in Malpas.
Malpas & Oswestry have finished 7th of the 9 teams in the Division.
There was better news on Thursday April 26 however, when Oswestry A won 3-2 at home to Shrewsbury A in the Shropshire Chess League, and hence secure the runners-up spot with one game to go.
The bottom two boards were the first to finish, with a loss by Dave Bennion on 4 being balanced by a win by Graham Ives on 5. The match was swung in favour of Oswestry with wins by captain Richard Bryant on 1 and vice-captain Charles Lowick Higgie on 2. Finally Brian Whyte lost on 3.
