Oswestry Eagles 8, IOM Vagabonds 12
THE Oswestry Eagles slipped to a slender defeat at the hands of the Isle of Man's Vagabonds despite taking the lead in a low-scoring game through a well worked try from Gareth Hughes.
He sprinted over as the Eagles dominated the first-half but they were punished by two lapses in concentration which denied them a second straight win in what was only their third home defeat of the campaign.
Both sides struggled to cope with the muddy conditions early on but Chris Crutchly opened the scoring for the Eagles when he kicked a penalty after the visitors were penalised for holding on in the tackle.
Oswestry then made a clean break through the line by Dan Williams which was halted ten yards short by the Vagabonds before an intelligent kick and chase by Nick Clay was also dealt with in similar fashion.
But Oswestry finally went over when they put together a passage of play beginning from a scrum inside their half, with Luca Owen-Youens collecting a pass off his toes to feed the ball across the line to Hughes who cut inside to score the game's first try.
The Vagabonds were given little time on the ball as they were repeatedly closed down trying to force their way back into the game but the match changed as a clearing Vagabonds kick was dropped deep in Oswestry's half allowing the visitors to gather and score a converted try on the hour.
And the Isle of Man side sensed the win as they piled on the pressure in the remaining 20 minutes which finally came when Oswestry lost a scrum 30-yards out with the Vagabonds inside centre picking the ball up to run clear and edge victory.
l The Eagles travel to eighth Southport this Saturday for a 2.15pm kick-off.
