UEFA Champions League, first qualifying round, first leg

B36 Torshavn 1 TNS 2

THE New Saints recovered from a nightmare start to snatch a last gasp winner on the Faroe Islands.

Mike Wilde was the hero with his late volley completing the Saints comeback and leaving them in pole position ahead of the second leg at Park Hall on Tuesday.

A virtually deserted Gundadalur Stadium saw the hosts lead on six minutes when Hans Samuelson curled home.

However TNS responded straight from kick-off with Scott Quigley completing his journey from academy to Champions' League scorer with a close range finish after the hosts failed to clear Wilde's cross.

TNS came to dominate the half with Sam Finley and Simon Spender firing over as conditions began to worsen in driving rain.

Both sides had chances at the start of the second-half with Wilde testing goalkeeper Tordur Thomsen while at the other end Hanus Thorsliefson forced goalkeeper Paul Harrison

Quigley blasted over before Hans Pauli Samuelson whipped a free-kick inches wide as the match opened up.

Both sides had spells of pressure with Finley forcing Thomsen into action while Samuelson was also denied at the other end.

The contest became increasingly broken up by fouls with referee Sven Bindels forced to reach into his pocket on more than occasion.

Harrison produced an excellent save to deny Roaldur Jacobsen while at the other end Greg Draper dragged wide of target.

However with seconds remaining a great run from Chris Seargeant was followed by a weighted cross for ex-Chester striker Wilde to volley home and complete a never to be forgotten night for TNS.
