A canal restoration group has paid tribute to Prunella Scales after the British TV icon died at the age of 93.
Scales, best known for her role as Sybil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers, had visited the Montgomery Canal with her husband Timothy West, who was in turn Vice-President of the Montgomery Waterway Restoration Trust, part of the Restore the Montgomery Canal! group.
The couple worked to make the canal network in Britain available to a whole new audience with their primetime TV series Great Canal Journeys, and had visited the Montgomery Canal on the Shropshire Powys border.
Michael Limbrey, chairman of the Montgomery Waterway Society, said: "Timothy West and Prunella Scales were great friends of the waterways and they cruised many of our British canals and others further afield for their TV series.

"We were delighted to welcome them to the Montgomery Canal with a boat trip at Llanymynech Canal Wharf.
"Their journeys showed why so many enjoy our waterways for their peace and tranquillity, the heritage of locks and bridges from a pre-industrial age, and the trees, plants and wildlife you can see along any canal. She will be sorely missed."
Work on the Montgomery canal continues apace on both the English and Welsh sections as the Shropshire Gap slowly disappears as dedicated volunteers restore the waterway.
The Shropshire Gap is the colloquial name for the unrestored section between Schoolhouse Bridge in Crickheath and the Welsh border at Llanymynech.
