TNS coach Anthony Limbrick has backed his squad ahead of the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round clash with Linfield.

At the time the Tizer went to press on Tuesday night the Saints were set to host the Northern Irish champions for the first leg at Park Hall before making the return trip to Belfast next Wednesday for the second leg.

"We have had a good pre-season," said Limbrick. "We have had plenty of games and players have each got minutes under their belt so we are going into these games in good shape."

The Saints have faced two Irish clubs as part of their preparation with a 2-1 win at home to Cliftonville followed by a 2-0 defeat in Larne.

Limbrick said: "They are very different sides to Linfield but they were good games and important in terms of preparation while also getting us used to travelling and training ahead of the second leg in Belfast."

The Saints have bolstered with three new signings with goalkeeper Dan Atherton joining from Warrington Town while defender Josh Pask joins from Coventry City and winger Josh Daniels from Shrewsbury Town.

Limbrick said: "We are delighted with the signings, each come to us with big game experience.

"In terms of Josh Daniels we had talks and with his family settled in Shrewsbury it was a good transfer for both parties.

"I must also praise the work of our academy coaches with four or five lads now training with the first team squad and knocking on the door for Europe."

Limbrick hoped the European campaign would still be rolling on when the JD Cymru Premier begins.

"You can feel the buzz and excitement in the camp at the moment," said Limbrick. "Last year we were knocked out but a week later our league season started and we went on an eight match unbeaten run."

The Saints also hope the return of crowds can boost their bid to progress,

"Last year we had to contend with empty grounds because of Covid so we are really looking forward to seeing the fans back this year," said Limbrick.
