Oswestry Olympians celebrated their 40th annversary in style at the Boys and Girls Club Marquee last weekend.

Members old and new from all sections of the club got together to reminisce and celebrate. There was wonderful food provided by Cave Kitchen and live music for everyone to dance to from local band The Bartells.

Oswestry Olympians was founded in November 1980 by Doug Morris and some other local athletes.

The Oswestry Olympians are unique being the only club that are members of both English and Welsh Athletics.

The catalyst for the club formation was that Park Hall Stadium was being passed back to local use by the Royal Artillery and Infantry as they ended their years based in Oswestry having once been home to 14,000 troops during World War One.

The stadium's athletics track was in a state of disrepair but through investment by local councils of the time and hard work by volunteers, it was brought up to standard with an all-weathermicro-gravel surface.

Doug Morris with the support of his wife Margaret, daughter Helen and members of the club organised many races locally, such as the Dick Whittington Dawdle, the Chariots of Fire 5k and of course the famous Lake Vyrnwy half marathon.

Over the years thousands of pounds were raised from these races and donated to local good causes. Doug sadly passed away in 2007.

Today the club still organises a series of races which include the Park Hall 5k, the Gyrn Gallop, the Mynydd Myfyr Hill climb and most recently the Marches School Oswestry Olympians 10k.

Over the years the club has helped develop many fine athletes who have gone on to compete at county, national and international level and 42 years on the club has a thriving membership who participate in track and field, road, cross country, fell and triathlon races.

Chairman Jacqui Gears said: "I would like to applaud the members who have dedicated much of their time to the club over the years, many of whom continue to do so. Thank you to you all, as the club would not be here without you."
