THE home of the first football fixture in Wales will host a special match to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

The border village of Llanymynech hosted the first recorded football match in Wales in the spring of 1858 when a team comprising of the Rockmen took on their Navvy rivals at a pitch at Glan Severn View.

The match was played six years before Wrexham Football Club formed in 1864.

While the current day club has no association with the teams which played on that spring evening in 1858, its players will be doing their bit to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee by recreating the action as best they can,

The club's Station Road ground will host the match on Friday, June 3 at 3pm with organisers promising '1858 rules'.

After the game the club will hold a race night from 5pm with proceeds going to the club and Hope House Hospice.
