ETHAN Finney is a Welsh boxing champion.

The 15-year-old from Oswestry travelled to Cardiff to represent Maelor Boxing Club in the inaugural Welsh Boxing Cup and returned home with a gold medal.

Finney was one of six clubmates from the Cefn Mawr-based Maelor Boxing Club to make the trip to Cardiff;s Welsh Institute of Sport.

Medals rained on the north east Wales club with Thomas Jones, Bowie Diamond and Chris Phillips claiming bronze while Gwion Ellis and Joshua Pilgrim returned home with silver medals.

The stage was set for Finney and the Oswestry star did not disappoint.

Finney beat Milwyn Lloyd of Llay Boxing Club in the semi-finals with victory secured on points.

Victory secured a final meeting with Llanharan Boxing Club’s Charlie Day.

Once again Finney came out on top on points to the delight of his coaches and clubmates and returned home with the coveted gold.

Proud coach Butch Jones said: “Ethan boxed well against two very good lads in Milwyn and Charlie.

“It was the boys first tournament for two years and we went to Cardiff to win medals and came home with six medals very good result.

“I’m very happy for the six boys who did Cefn Mawr and north Wales very proud. and would like to thank Gary Richards and Morgan Evans of the Maelor Boxing Club for working so hard on the weekend.”

Meanwhile the Maelor Boxing Club club coach backed the teenager from Oswestry to keep on improving.

The 63kg class boxer has so far contested 20 fights during his time at Maelor with a 50 per cent winning ratio.

Finney has also boxed in two Welsh Boxing Championships and fought in Portugal.
