Oswestry Tennis Club men’s first team have reached the final of the Shropshire McKenzie Shield summer tournament.

The achievement has been celebrated by club members as the border club strive to bring home honours.

The team captained by David Clough, who partnered Brett Hollywell as first pair, and Gary Edwards and Kobe Jones who played as second pair swept aside the Cound team without dropping a set in their semi final challenge.

David and Brett won their first rubber against Cound’s first pair by 6-4, 6-4 and won their second rubber against the Cound second pairing by the same score.

Gary and Kobe won their rubbers by 6-0, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-1 respectively.

The team now looks forward to playing in the final when they will carry the hopes of their town club as it seeks to welcome county silverware to its trophy cabinet.

The Oswestry ladies first team were unfortunate is encountering a strong Bridgnorth team in their semi-final.

Despite playing some amazing tennis the team, captained by Kat Oakley who partnered Fiona Russell, and Clare and Millie Hann were unsuccessful in reaching the final.

However the women’s team earned plaudits for their style of tennis and great run to the semi-final stage.

Meanwhile the town’s two tennis clubs continued to foster warm relations as they have since the easing of social distancing restrictions and return of competitive sport.

Oswestry Tennis Club (OTC) and Oswestry Team Tennis (OTT) continued their close relationship with a friendly match against each other played on the OTC courts.

The OTC pairing of Steve Winter and Daniel Edwards played the OTT pairing of Andy Edwards and Calin Balasa and lost 1-6,7-6,0-1.

Meanwhile the OTC pairing of Millie Hann and Ellie Edwards beat the OTT pairing of Hattie Leslie Miller and Nia Christoforou 6-2, 7-5.

The second rubbers were played as mixed doubles with Steve and Millie losing against Calin and Hattie 6-7, 3-6 whilst siblings Daniel and Ellie lost against Andy and Nia by 4-6, 4-6.

The club’s re-unite for a social tournament hosted by OTC on Sunday, October 24.

Oswestry Tennis Club meets every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 5.45 to 10pm and every Wednesday and Friday from 4.30 to 10pm.

The club is also open all day on Saturday and Sunday’s until 10pm.
