Freya Anderson collected her fifth medal of the European Aquatics Championships in Rome as she helped Great Britain secure silver in the mixed 4×100 metres freestyle relay last night.

After the efforts of team-mates Tom Dean, Matt Richards and Anna Hopkin, a thrilling final leg saw Anderson overtake rivals from Sweden and Italy.

The British team finished half a second behind gold medallists France, while Sweden took bronze.

Anderson has also won gold in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay, silver in the 4x200m freestyle relay and 200m freestyle and 100m freestyle bronze.

The 21-year-old former Ellesmere College swimming star said on britishswimming.org: “Everyone’s been telling me it was so close between fourth and second, so I’m just really happy to get my hand on the wall and get that medal.

“On reflection, it’s been such a busy year that I can’t really complain getting medals at Europeans.

“A gold would’ve been lovely, a gold tonight would’ve been nice, but I can’t complain with two more silvers to add to the collection.”

GB have 11 swimming medals in total at the Championships – Monday also saw one secured in the diving as that programme opened, with Grace Reid, James Heatly, Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix and Noah Williams taking bronze in the mixed team event.

Italy won the event, while Ukraine were the silver medallists.
