An MP has warned that rising inflation and surging fuel costs are forcing families to make difficult choices.
Helen Morgan, who represents North Shropshire, has called on the Government to take urgent action in light of fuel prices seeing their biggest increase since January 2023, which she attributes to what she describes as "Trumpflation"—economic pressures triggered by Donald Trump's war on Iran.
National inflation figures show rates rose to 3.3 per cent in March, up from three per cent in February, with fuel prices seeing their biggest increase since January 2023.
Ms Morgan, a Liberal Democrat, said: "It’s unfair that the hardworking people of North Shropshire are being punished, as we’re seeing yet another rise in inflation caused by Trump’s idiotic war on Iran.
"People shouldn’t have to think about stockpiling fuel or cutting back on food to fill up their car or van – adding to an already devastating cost-of-living crisis.
"It’s only the Lib Dems who are putting pressure on the government to protect British families from Trumpflation – they must act to cut fuel prices and bring down the cost of living."
The MP is calling on Chancellor Rachel Reeves to implement an emergency 10p cut to fuel duty, which she says would save drivers 12p per litre at the pump.
Ms Morgan has also highlighted the impact on rural households in North Shropshire that rely on heating oil. Unlike gas and electricity customers, who are protected by a price cap, there is no such safeguard for heating oil users, leaving many exposed to rising costs.
A Liberal Democrat-commissioned poll suggests that Britons are feeling the squeeze from rising fuel prices.
Among regular drivers, 30 per cent said they had reduced other spending to afford petrol or diesel.
One in 10 admitted to stockpiling fuel, nearly half (49 per cent) reported driving less, and 28 per cent said they had cancelled or postponed non-essential journeys, such as visiting friends or family.
In a bid to draw public attention to the issue, the Liberal Democrats launched a campaign in central London.
On Wednesday, they unveiled a large balloon depicting Donald Trump in Whitehall, flanked by “cheerleaders” Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch.
The event was designed to highlight what the party calls "Trumpflation".
