Chirk AAA to celebrate 150th anniversary milestone in July

Founded by colliers from the local mines, Chirk is recognised as one of the oldest football clubs in Wales and has been a constant presence in grassroots football ever since.

To mark the anniversary, the club is hosting a special celebration evening at the Chirk AAA Sports & Social Club.

Club secretary Nigel Roberts will present a video looking back over 150 years of the club’s history, charting its rise from a village side to one of the most decorated names in the early years of Welsh football.

Former players, managers, committee members, supporters, sponsors and anyone with a connection to Chirk AAA are warmly invited to attend, share memories, meet old friends and enjoy a long-overdue catch up.

Refreshments will be served on the night, and a Facebook event will be set up nearer the time so people can confirm their attendance.

Chirk AAA’s proud record gives supporters plenty to reminisce about.

The club were one of the dominant forces in the Welsh Cup’s early decades, lifting the trophy five times between 1887 and 1894 during a golden era for the Colliers.

They later became a mainstay of the Wrexham-area Welsh National League, winning the top division title on numerous occasions and continuing to fly the flag for the village in the national pyramid.

Perhaps the most famous name to emerge from Chirk is Billy Meredith, the “Welsh Wizard” who began his career with the club before going on to star for both Manchester City and Manchester United and win 48 caps for Wales.

His story is just one of many that will feature in the anniversary presentation.

The celebration evening will take place at the Chirk AAA Sports & Social Club on Saturday, July 18 at 7pm, and the club is urging everyone with links to Chirk to spread the word and help pack the clubhouse for a night of nostalgia.
