Burials at a cemetery near Oswestry are to be restricted to people who live in the parish after a decision by the local council.

Burials at Hengoed Cemetery are to be restricted as of the turn of the new year after a “difficult decision" by Selattyn and Gobowen Parish Council.

The council, which is the burial authority passed the resolution after “considerable debate”, and said the decision came after concerns over the remaining capacity at the cemetery.

Speaking on behalf of the Parish Council, Chairman Cllr Sylvia Dyke said: “There are now fewer than 130 new grave plots at Hengoed Cemetery and the remaining space is rapidly filling.

“It’s hard to predict when the cemetery will become full but, by taking this difficult decision, the Council has ensured that people who live in this parish will have the option of being buried at Hengoed Cemetery for a few more years.”

Selattyn and Gobowen Parish Council said the move is way for it “to protect burial space within the parish to ensure that parishioners, who wish to do so, can continue to be buried in Hengoed Cemetery for as long as possible.”

The decision will “restrict burials in new graves and new cremated remains plots to parishioners only from 1 January 2025”.

The council confirmed that the restrictions “will not affect second burials into existing graves and existing cremated remains plots or burials into pre-purchased plots”.
