The restoration of Schoolhouse Bridge on the Montgomery Canal, that was completed by the end of June 2024 is paving the way for the canal to reach the Welsh border.
This triumph is thanks to the relentless efforts of the volunteers from Restore the Montgomery team who secured substantial public donations.
The bridge is on the ‘Shropshire Gap’, which is an unrestored stretch between Crickheath and Llanymynech.
With the Schoolhouse Bridge open, backing plans are being developed to refill the waterway, including two stylish curves designed by engineers from the Canal & River Trust.

The structure of the bridge also has road traffic in mind, crossing the canal at an angle forcing the channel to accommodate the bridge.
The project manager, Tom Fulda said: "Parts are all but ready for water testing this winter and the rebuilding of the Wharf wall at Crickheath is nearly complete.
"The Society is also very grateful for the help of members of the Dry Stone Walling Association who have been present at all the work parties this year.
"We’ve had to have some extra work parties this summer and it’s great to see so many, old and new, volunteers that have stepped up – or down as the case maybe – to keep the project on schedule."
