THE POLICE watchdog has issued a statement regarding an ongoing investigation to find a missing man at Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.
Since last Thursday, searches have been ongoing in the area near the aqueduct after police were called to concerns for the safety of a man.
Yesterday (Monday, June 3), North Wales Police said as there had been prior police contact with the man - it had referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
The IOPC has issued a statement on the matter.
A spokesperson said: “We have been advised by North Wales Police that a referral is due to be made to the IOPC in relation to a man who was last seen in the Wrexham area on Thursday, May 30.

“We understand that this is due to the fact that the man had prior contact with police.
“Once we receive the referral it will be assessed to determine if we need to do anything further.”
North Wales Police said the North West Underwater Search Team are helping with searches in the River Dee.
Police are also continuing foot searches in the vicinity of the aqueduct.
Chief Inspector Stephen Roberts said: “Our thoughts remain with the man’s family at this extremely difficult time as searches continue.
“I would also like to thank the public for their continued patience and understanding.”
