COMMUNITY groups in Oswestry have been picking up cheques from monies raised by the Christmas Tree of Light Appeal launched by a town Rotary club.

The Rotary Club of Oswestry has handed over payments to five local causes from the club's annual Christmas Tree of Light Appeal this week.

The recipients of the vital funds were Shropshire Youth Association), OsNosh, Lingen Davies Cancer Appeal, Marches Riding for the Disabled and Severn Hospice, who all received donations of £450 towards their work in the community.

Tree of Light chairman Duncan Borrowman said he and his fellow Rotarians were proud to support the groups through the appeal because of the work that they do.

He said: “This diverse group of organisations provide much needed support to many people in the community.

“I am delighted that we were able to raise these essential funds in support of their work.

“I know they struggle with financial and volunteer support and any help people can give is always very much appreciated."

Each year The Rotary Club of Oswestry organises its Tree of Light campaign around Christmas time to raise funds for charities.

Duncan, who is also landlord of the Bailey head pub on the Bailey Head, added: “Christmas is a time to celebrate with loved ones, look back fondly over happy years and to remember those we have loved and lost.

“For many it can also be a time of sadness, when the loss of a loved one is most keenly felt, a time when we particularly remember those people whom we love but, sadly, see no longer.
