THE popular heritage rail line in Oswestry was given a further boost this week with the collection of a newly-restored carriage.

Cambrian Heritage Railways (CHR) runs spring and summer services from its Oswald Road base to Weston and back again.

On Tuesday, March 13, the volunteers brought in a carriage first built six decades ago and will now be used as part of the trips to Weston.

CHR chairman Rob Williams praised the work of the volunteers in nearby Llynclys for restoring the carriageway and for also transporting into town ready to be connected to an engine.

He said: “This carriage has been restored by our Carriage and Wagon team at Llynclys and is a credit to the skill of our volunteers.

“It has been relocated to Oswestry to bolster capacity on the Oswestry to Weston wharf heritage line which starts its 2024 operating season over Easter weekend 2024.

“This carriage is more than 60 years old and has been restored to its 1960s condition – this fits in with CHR heritage steam and diesel locomotives.”

The carriage was brought by road to the station building in Oswald Road by volunteers who had worked on its restoration at the Carriage & Wagon Department at Llynclys.

Dave Roll, also from CHR, added: “The lovingly-restored 60-year-old carriage will now be prepared ready to add extra capacity to the trains later in the spring.
