THE next mayor of Oswestry has been announced as Councillor Mike Isherwood, who was confirmed at March’s full meeting.

Cllr Isherwood, who has served as outgoing mayor Cllr Olly Rose’s deputy for the 2023/24 civic year, was confirmed at Wednesday night's (March 13) meeting with all members supporting his nomination.

The Green Party councillor – who is also set to stand at the next General Election for the same party – was next in the pecking order and will take up the role in May.

His deputy for 2024/25 will be his former Green Party colleague – and now a Lib Dem – Rosie Radford, who is next in line.

Cllr Rose said: “Cllr Isherwood will make an excellent mayor.”

Meanwhile, some changes were made in chamber to the council’s new equality policy, which was put forward to councillors for approval.

Cllr Sam Chadwick praised the positive language used in the document but called for changes to be made.

She cited the use of the word 'disabled' and also highlight that sexual orientation should be LGBTQ-plus rather specific sexual orientation.

Cllr Chadwick also called for better training which was welcomed by the clerk.

Cllr Radford also called for sex to be separated from sexual orientation as per the law, with sex used instead of gender.

The changes were accepted as well as the altered polices for code of conduct, financial regulations, balance of trade for Oswestry markets and High Winds.

Also discussed at the meeting at the Guildhall was a request for town council to fund livery on a bus to advertise a free service on Saturdays.

Corrie Davies, project development officers at Oswestry Town Council, produced a report for councillors highlighting the options for livery on the back of operator Tanat Valley buses, with a recommendation for £1,045 before VAT for four buses.

However, Cllr Duncan Kerr immediately put forward a motion to dismiss the request.

He said: “I don’t think we should proceed with this as Oswestry Town Council doesn’t get the credit for the funding of that bus.

“I don’t think we should be spend more money on it but should remind Tanat Valley that it doesn’t cost a lot of money to give us some credit.”

Cllr Frank Davis added: “I agree with Duncan – it needs a thanks and why are we wasting money on nothing.”

Councillors voted not to spend the money.
