THE yellow weather warning for north Shropshire, North and Mid Wales for Thursday has been updated with residents told to expect higher winds.

A warning was given this week but on Wednesday (today), the Met Office says it has updated the warning, which is expected to cover all of the north United Kingdom plus Northern Ireland.

While it has brought forward the end trimming of the warning – from midnight on Thursday to 9pm – meteorologists say that they expect the winds to impact more on day-to-day life, with reports of winds up to 80mph.

It has been named Storm Pia by the Danish Met Office.

They added: “Some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer.

“Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport expected.

“Some short-term loss of power and other services.

“Coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves.

“Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges.”

Meanwhile, SP Energy, which provides power for north Shropshire, has issued advice around any potential power cuts on Thursday.

Guy Jefferson, Chief Operating Officer at SP Energy Networks, said: “Due to the potential for damage to our power lines, power cuts become more likely in high winds and it’s important our customers are fully prepared, just in case.

“We will mobilise teams of engineers to areas where we expect the high winds to have the most impact and our teams are on hand 24/7 to help all of our customers should they find themselves without power.

“The sooner we know about a power cut, the quicker we can begin work to get electricity restored, so if you experience a power cut, please report it to us by calling the free, national emergency helpline 105.”
