SHROPSHIRE Council says there is “nothing to suggest" that a new surface in Church Street was to blame for two people falling, and needing ambulance call-outs, on Tuesday morning (October 3).

Ambulance services were called out after two people, both understood to be elderly, fell on the newly-paved road.

A spokesperson from Shropshire Council confirmed that its contractor visited Church Street on Tuesday, and said in response to local concerns that the new surface was not responsible.

A council statement said: “There were no loose kerbs and nothing to suggest that the new surface has been responsible for any falls.

“Rediweld – who manufacture the new kerbing - have also advised us that it is used in many other locations and they’re not aware of any such issues elsewhere.

“Meanwhile some ‘New Footway Layout’ signs are being installed either end of Church Street to advise pedestrians and road users.”

West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) were first called out at 10.57am, Tuesday, October 3, and one ambulance was sent to the scene where they found an elderly man who sustained “injuries not believed to be serious”.

The staff shared self-care advice with the man before discharging him at the scene.

Half an hour later, at about 11.33am, two ambulances were called out again to an incident involving an elderly woman.

A spokesperson from WMAS said: “Upon arrival we found an elderly woman who was assessed by ambulance staff and had sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

“She was conveyed to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for further assessment.”
