AN OSWESTRY woman living with breast cancer has thanked people who helped her raised double her target after she ‘braved the shave’.

Amanda McGregor, 59, started chemotherapy last week and was told her hair would fall out around her birthday on Friday, September 29.

She decided to take matters into her own hands and raise money for Shropshire-based cancer charity Lingen Davies and also for Oswestry Cat Rescue and is set to reach £300 soon, double her target.

And she duly shaved her head on Saturday, September 23 ahead of her 60th birthday.

Amanada said: “It went fine -  we‘ve raised £280 so far on the Just Giving Page including the £45 we raised on the day with a bucket.

“I’m very proud that set a target of £150 and we’ve nearly raised double of that which is great at the end.

“It was just me that ‘braved the shave’ – because I’ve got cancer and I am going through chemotherapy, my hair is going to go anyway.

“So I wanted to turn a negative into a positive so I tried to raise money for the Lingen Davies Cancer Appeal and also Oswestry Cat Rescue by doing the head shaving.

“It gives me comfort that I am in control – once you are diagnosed with cancer, you have no control over it after you have to start taking the medication in your treatment.

“You have to take everything.

“But I’m 60 soon and I didn’t want the birthday present of waking up with my hair falling out on my pillow.”

Amanda was supported by former Oswestry mayor Councillor Jay Moore in setting up the Just Giving Page and she thanked him and Clare Barker, the barber who carried out the cut.

“I want to thank Cllr Moore for setting up the Just Giving and also to Clare from the Cut Hut in the indoor market hall for doing the shave,” she added.

“And to everyone who donated.”
