OSWESTRY’s Wilko branch to join the final 111 stores to shut in early October as part of the final phase of closures.

The New Street shop is set to follow the other branches on Sunday, October 8, as Wilko is preparing to close the doors of its last remaining stores, marking the conclusion of the historic retailer's downfall.

The hardware and furnishings retailer fell into administration last month due to the combined pressures of weak consumer spending and debts to suppliers.

OTHER NEWS:

In a previous statement, Doug Putman, founder of Putman Investments, said: “It is with great disappointment that we can no longer continue in the purchase process for Wilko having worked with administrators and suppliers over several weeks to seek a viable way to rescue it as a going concern.

"The commitment to overhauling the trading framework of the business with partners and the costs of running Wilko’s legacy operations infrastructure combined has meant that a stable foundation could not be secured to ensure long-term success for the business and its people in the way that we would have wanted.”

However, the Wilko brand won't completely vanish from the UK high street, as The Range has stepped in to acquire Wilko's brand, website, and intellectual property.

The Range intends to feature the acquired brand in its own stores.

Wilko, originally established by James Kemsey Wilkinson in Leicester in 1930, employed 12,500 workers before its unfortunate collapse.
