AN ANGLESEY man who caused a fatal HGV crash near the Britannia Bridge has been spared jail.

Ian Paul Owen, Ty’n Rhos, Gaerwen, appeared before Caernarfon Crown Court for sentecing on Wednesday (September 13).

The 40-year-old had previously admitted causing 52-year-old Marc Winston Roberts' death on the A55 in the early hours of January 20, 2022.

Mr Roberts, from Amlwch, was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, which involved four vehicles – a Volvo 460 Large Goods Vehicle, a Peugeot 3008, a Kia Sportage and a Scania R450 Large Goods Vehicle.

Another man, Gareth Wyn Morris, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor.

Prosecuting, Elen Owen, said Mr Roberts and Mr Morris worked together and travelled home in convoy. They had stopped at temporary lights on the westbound carriageway near the Britannia Bridge - with it being down to one lane due to roadworks.

Owen, driving a Volvo HGV, hit the back of Mr Roberts' Peugeot car - whose vehicle was shunted into the rear of Mr Morris' car. Mr Morris' car was pushed under the rear trailer unit being towed by the Scanis HGV.

Mr Roberts' car was rotated 180 degrees and suffered "catastophic" damage and he was declared dead at the scene.

Mr Morris suffered serious facial injuries and was placed in an induced coma for 11 days. Nerves on one side of his face had been severed.

Defending, John Wyn Williams, apologised on his client's behalf to the families of Mr Roberts and Mr Morris and that Owen has shown "genuine remorse" for what happened.

Owen had a previous clean driving record and no previous motoring convictions.

Owen was handed a two-year prison sentence - suspended for two years. He was disqualified from driving for two years and has to complete 200 hours of community work.

Inspector Iwan Roberts, from North Wales Police’ Roads Crime Unit, said: "Owen has to live with the knowledge that his actions has resulted in the death of a much loved man.

"This is a tragic case that once again shows how vitally important it is for motorists to give their complete and unreserved attention whilst driving on the roads.

"Our thoughts and sympathies remain with Marc Winston Roberts’ family at this difficult time."
