A POPULAR sheepdog trials event returned to the Ceiriog Valley near Chirk recently.

Following a week marked by anxious weather forecasts, the Ceiriog Valley Sheepdog Trials and Show event ultimately proved to be a resounding success once again despite a few scattered showers.

The event, which saw some dedicated participants enduring the rain, highlighted the enduring spirit of the local community.

A spokesperson for the event said: “A big thank you to everyone who came along on Saturday, August 26 to the fields at Tal y Garth, Glyn Ceiriog for the Ceiriog Valley Sheepdog Trials and Show.

“After anxiously checking the weather forecast all week, we were relieved to end up with a good day bar a couple of showers, with some loyal stalwarts even turning up in the rain.”

The Open Trials competition, held on Friday, August 25, featured impressive displays of skill and determination, ultimately awarding the top honours to the best in their respective categories.

Bryn Davies, of Bryneglwys in Denbighshire, emerged victorious with his faithful companion Tweed, claiming the title in the main trials event.

Elgan Jones from just down the road in Llanarmon and his trusty sheepdog Bill clinched victory in the local category, while Jack Roberts of Bala triumphed in the novice category alongside his loyal companion Robin.

One of the standout features of this year's event was the record-breaking number of entries in the sheep competition.

Among the superb exhibits on display, the Interbreed Champion title went to Glyn Jones and Sons of Cwm y Geifr, Llanarmon, showcasing their exceptional Welsh Mountain sheep.

The shearing competitions, always a crowd-pleaser, were expertly managed by the newly appointed Stewards Dan Owen and Dave Green.

Elgar Hughes of Glyn Ceiriog, the reigning Hand Shearing Champion at the Royal Welsh Show, secured victory in the Hand Shearing event, while Arwyn Davies of Bryneglwys dominated the Farmers Shearing category.

Morgan Hughes from Llangollen displayed exceptional skills to triumph in the Contractors Shearing competition.

The equestrian enthusiasts were treated to a display of beautiful horses and ponies, with both riders and their equine partners presenting themselves at their best.

The coveted Supreme Show Champion title went to Morgan Nicholson, showcasing Backseat Driver with undeniable excellence.

The Companion Dog Show, always a crowd-pleaser, drew in attendees with their adorable four-legged companions, accompanied by their devoted human counterparts.

The dog agility competition provided entertainment for all ages, delivering joy and laughter throughout the event.

The success of the open trials would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of the event's stewards and volunteers, whose unwavering commitment and camaraderie ensure the show's continued success year after year.

The organising committee extended its special gratitude to President Tegid Davies and his wife Sarah for gracing the event with their warmth and sunny company, as well as to all the judges who generously lent their time and expertise, contributing to the vibrant spirit of the day.
