POLICE have issued an update after a shop roof collapsed in Gwynedd.

The Chronicle reported this afternoon (Saturday, September 2) that police closed off Dolgellau town centre due to an ongoing emergency incident.

The roof of a Spar shop on Plan-yn-Dre Street partially collapsed at about 12.55pm - with four people inside at the time.

The emergency services, including firefighters and an air ambulance, swiftly attended the scene.

Three members of staff and one member of the public were able to escape the property. All four have been checked by the Ambulance Service, North Wales Police said.

A Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust spokesperson said it sent three road ambulances, two duty officers, the Cymru High Acuity Response Unit (CHARU) and a Wales Air Ambulance.

They said two casualties were taken by road to hospital, with one going to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor and one to Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth.

Chief Inspector Rob Rands said: “Whilst we don’t believe that anyone remains unaccounted for, a specialist search team are on their way to the location to assist our colleagues from the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

“Gwynedd County Council and the Health and Safety Executive are all fully briefed. Police officers remain at the scene whilst the investigation is ongoing.

“The area surrounding the shop is expected to remain closed for a considerable time and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all local residents and business owners for their cooperation and understanding.”

A spokesperson for Spar said: "We are aware of a structural incident at our Dolgellau store which took place earlier today. Currently store colleagues and a member of the public are being treated by paramedics on site. We are awaiting updates before commenting further."
