Llanfyllin Show returned for its 2023 event which was hailed by organisers as a “fantastic” showcase for the town.

On Saturday, August 12, Llanfyllin’s annual celebration of countryside and community returned to Bodfach Park with a wide range of events, competitions and trade stalls.

Despite some less-than-ideal weather, visitors and volunteers braved the cloudy skies to see the 2023 Show, the second consecutive year following the event’s two-year hiatus as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

While organisers of the show have yet to finalise their total headcount, Llanfyllin Mayor Peter Lewis is confident they surpassed their 2022 number of approximately 6,000 attendees.

He said: “It was a fantastic event with a great crowd, which made for a really good reflection of Llanfyllin and the wider community.

“I was manning the gate for a lot of the day, but I could tell just from the car park, which was fuller than ever, that the Show was packed with visitors.

“A huge amount of work goes into organising Llanfyllin Show, especially when you consider that it’s just one day of celebrations, but it’s absolutely worth the effort.

“Shows like this are a window into rural communities, as well as a chance to showcase what we have to offer and bring everyone together.

“Each year the public expects more and more and rising costs mean it’s always a challenge to deliver, but thanks to our volunteers and organisers the show manages to keep moving forward year after year.”

Organisers of the event said that the 2023 instalment saw a record number of trade stands, far surpassing last year as the total number was up by 30. Charlies Ag and Turf took home the Gareth and Mary Lewis Perpetual Cup for Best Trade Stand.

Other stands offered a range of activities for visitors, such as Llanfyllin Town Football Club’s penalty shootout, Llanfyllin Foresters archery club and Llanfyllin Fire Station showing visitors around their fire engines.

A highlight of the show was the return of Ben Atkinson’s Action Horse Stunt Team, who had impressed crowds the previous year.

Show secretary Sian Lewis said: “When I initially approached the team’s manager about returning, he said Ben was not going to do any single day shows in 2023.

“But when Ben was told that we wanted him again, he agreed to come because he had enjoyed last year’s show so much.”
