OSWESTRY Town Council has taken a proactive step towards combating social isolation and loneliness by embracing the Chatty Cafe Scheme.

The initiative forms a crucial part of the council's efforts to address social isolation, which was the focal point of the Annual Town Meeting in February 2023.

Founded by Alexandra Hoskyn, the Chatty Cafe Scheme aims to break down barriers and encourage meaningful conversations among people.

The idea originated from Alexandra's experience at a supermarket café where she observed a lack of interaction among patrons.

Determined to change this, she introduced 'Chatter & Natter' signs on tables, creating a welcoming space for people to engage with one another.

A spokesperson from the council said: “Anyone can join. If you're on your own, in a couple, with a friend, if you're a carer why not sit there with who you care for, mums and babies, dads and babies, grandparents and babies, young people, older people and anyone in between.

“It’s a great way to meet new people in your community.”

Residents of Oswestry can now find the 'Chatter & Natter table' at Hatters Café in the Powis Hall Indoor Market, every Wednesday.

The Chatty Cafe Scheme has witnessed significant growth since its inception in 2019.

Expanding from a handful of 'Chatter & Natter' tables, it has now established a network of nearly 600 venues across the country by 2023.

Additionally, the scheme offers a telephone friendship service and virtual chatty café sessions via Zoom, catering to diverse preferences and needs.
