A GOLF course near Oswestry that has been at the centre of a long planning wrangle could soon have new owners after it was placed up for sale.

Henlle Park Golf Course, in Gobowen, is up for sale with estate agents Savills for £2 million, but the agents have clarified that an offer has not been received, despite an online property list listing it so.

The course, which is closed to the public, has seen applications to turn it into a holiday park rejected by Shropshire Council, while the government’s planning inspectorate turned down an appeal in April this year.

The appeal was lodged by Coppergreen Leisure Resorts and golf club owner Ralph Tomley who wanted to reduce the course to nine holes from 18.

This has led to the sale of the course with a re-opening one of the options being floated by Savills.

They said: “Henlle Park Golf Club comprises beautiful undulating land with three lakes, several pools and mature trees, with views of the Welsh hills in the background.

“Since opening for play in 2003, Henlle has hosted county competitions, inter county Matches and the Regional Senior Amateur Championship and is one of Shropshire's premier parkland golf courses.

“The golf course is no longer trading, providing an opportunity for a future owner to re-instate the golf and functions business or apply for alternative use.”

The course also offers a two-bedroom, second floor apartment and office with views over the course, with a Clubhouse/function building with leisure facilities, bar, dining area and kitchen.

There is a shop, plus changing facilities and buildings for staff.

The course closed ‘temporarily’ in March 2022 while former Masters champion and Llanymynech-born Ian Woosnam was once tipped to be buying it.

The original applications received a mix of support and local opposition.
