A LONG-RUNNING group in Chirk will come to an end next month.

Chirk History Society will fold after 30 years due to falling numbers and rising costs, according to its committee.

Secretary John Warren confirmed the closure will be after the last talk at the parish hall on Wednesday, July 12.

He said: “There’s not anyone who wants to join the committee and sometimes the speakers split the membership.

“People don’t come forward to organise speakers and some of them cost up to £90 now.

“If we were a big society then it would be ok but we have just eight [members] and that’s not enough people to continue for the future.

“The events are in the evening and in the winter, people just want to say home.

“We’ve had it for 30 years which has been a good run and any monies left over will be distributed locally.

“There’s a group up in Glyn Ceiriog that will be going and there’s a lot of other history societies in North Wales too.

“I just want to say thanks to everybody that’s ever supported us in the past.”
