SHROPSHIRE Council is remaining tight-lipped over plans for a commercial venture at a former Oswestry supermarket.

A consultation launched by Shirehall, which will end on Wednesday, May 24 is asking for public views on the proposed dropping of the charges at Beatrice Street car park - adjacent to the former Morrisons store.

Shropshre Council says this is would allow leasing of the land as well as the building which has stood empty since the store moved to its Shrewsbury Road location in 2019.

In the interim part of the car park was used for Covid-19 testing however this ceased last year.

However, a spokesman for the unitary authority said further details on the commercial venture could not be revealed.

He said: “Shropshire Council is proposing to lease the car park and adjoining building to a commercial business.

“For commercial reasons we’re unable to say any more at this stage, and until the consultation has been completed.”

The consultation, which is available online, says the changes to the car park in Beatrice Street could see a potential two-hour free stay.

It said: “Shropshire Council is proposing to revoke the order on the Beatrice Street Car Park, Oswestry, thus removing the current charges and permits and all other terms and conditions.

“The reason for the proposal to revoke the order is that the council is proposing to lease the adjoining building and car park to a commercial business.

“Shropshire Council proposes that the leaseholder will operate the car park to facilitate parking for their customers with a free two-hour parking stay.
